From Dreams to Reality: My Half Marathon Journey
As I recently celebrated my 47th birthday, I found myself reflecting on my life's journey—one filled with triumphs and challenges. This year stood out particularly because I achieved something I'd always deemed monumental: I completed a half marathon. If you had asked me in the past if I could do it, I would have likely laughed it off. Yet, here I am, sharing my story of perseverance and growth.
The Spark That Ignited My Journey
The catalyst for my half marathon journey began in December 2023 when my daughter Anne proposed running a 10-kilometre race with me in Ottawa. After having registered alone, her enthusiasm quickly transformed my solitary venture into a shared adventure. Knowing she would travel from Fredericton to support me added a special layer to the experience, fueling my motivation.
The day of the race in May 2024 was filled with excitement. Although I set a simple goal of completing the race, I found myself finishing in just under one hour and 30 minutes. The thrill of crossing the finish line was invigorating, especially with the cheers of my family resonating in the background. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of a more significant challenge ahead—a half marathon.
A Leap of Faith: Signing Up for the Half Marathon
After completing the 10-kilometre race, Anne announced her intention to run a half marathon in Fredericton with her colleagues. Initially skeptical, I thought about all that was involved: taking time off work, booking flights, adjusting my training schedule, and overcoming the summer's heat. But the thought of spending time with Anne ignited my determination. This opportunity was more than just running; it was about connecting with my daughter and embracing a challenge I never thought possible.
Training Hard: Finding Balance Between Work and Running
Creating a training plan became my new objective. However, the excitement quickly waned as the reality of juggling a demanding work schedule set in. Working 12-hour shifts on weekends, I struggled to find time for the three weekly training runs I had planned. Mondays to Fridays became a race against time, where I pushed through shorter, medium, and longer runs amid fatigue.
Despite the grueling nature of my long runs—where exhaustion consumed me and left me feeling like a ghost of myself—my motivation remained steadfast until I learned of a cut-off time for the race. A panic set in: I had to finish within three hours and 30 minutes. As a self-proclaimed slow runner, this news almost derailed my plans, filling my head with doubt.
The Day of Reckoning: Confronting My Fears
Determined, I boarded the flight to Fredericton, fueled with anticipation and dread in equal measure. Picking up my bib and shirt at the race expo finally turned the abstract goal into a palpable reality. Despite waves of apprehension, I reminded myself of my achievements and repeated positive affirmations. I had come this far—I was ready to fight through the insecurities.
After the Finish Line: Lessons Learned Along the Way
Ultimately, the journey taught me that running a half marathon was more than about finishing a race. It became a metaphor for every hard thing in life. Each moment of self-doubt and every stride through training culminated into an experience that illuminated my resilience and capacity for change.
As I crossed the finish line, immersed in elation, I realized the importance of taking risks and embracing challenges, no matter how insurmountable they may seem. I transformed not only my physical capabilities but also fortified a deeper relationship with my daughter—an unexpected gift from this journey.
Embracing New Challenges: What’s Next?
Reflecting upon this journey empowers me to face new challenges with an open heart. Whether it's running another race, exploring a new hobby, or even embracing personal or professional goals, I remind myself that I can do hard things. Each step we take teaches us resilience, strengthens our bonds with loved ones, and reminds us that hurdles are simply opportunities for growth. So, what challenge will you take on next?
